Craftspace is a charity creating opportunities to see, make and be curious about exceptional contemporary craft. They are based in the Custard Factory in Birmingham and work collaboratively regionally, nationally and internationally building relationships between artists, people and organisations and encourage the sharing of ideas, skills and knowledge.
Made in the Middle touring exhibition has been a constant feature of Craftspace’s artistic programme over the last thirty years. The development activities associated with the exhibition have included curators’ forums, learning and engagement projects and partnerships with corporate business. It has also provided commissioned opportunities for exhibition designers, graphic designers, photographers and other freelancers.
This year, a collaboration with the University of Wolverhampton Graphic Design department led to third year students being given a live brief to develop and propose design concepts for the Made in the Middle website. Mayman Design were contacted to work with the students to bring the winning web design to life and produce the finished online result.
Bringing the charity, the university staff and students together, we ensured that all parties felt involved which was important to us considering the time and effort each student had spent displaying graphic design concepts. The winning student was invited to project briefings with the development and production team from Craftspace and to our design studio for a live tutorial and demonstrations of web design elements.
Given that the exhibitions were the inspiring feature for this project, the web design focused on large images to best showcase the artist’s creations. Also embedded were video links, flipbook catalogues and previous archives.
